Species File identification number

There is an identification number that is used for cross references between SFS-based databases and other third-party databases.  This identification number is contained in column TaxonNameID of tblTaxa.  Taxon names in each species file database have a unique TaxonNameID.  This includes names at all ranks and also synonyms, homonyms, etc.  Custom programs can be added to species files to exchange data with other databases in order to update information in either or both databases.

Special care is required when subgenera or subspecies are involved.   If subgenera are no longer used in a genus, then the TaxonNameID of the former nominotypical subgenus becomes the TaxonNameID of the genus.  If subgenera are subsequently recognized in the genus, then the TaxonNameID of the genus is moved back to the nominotypical subgenus.  That means a new TaxonNameID must be given to the taxon of rank genus.  The behavior is the same at the species level when subspecies are created or dropped.  If a species has subspecies, use the TaxonNameID of the nominotypical subspecies.

To use the Species File identification number in another database:

To see a table of identification numbers, complete and submit the information below.  You can use your browser's option to obtain a copy the HTML source code for the resulting page.  Then delete the portion of HTML outside the table.  Most database programs are able to import the table from this format.  The current program has been written to provide the information needed for the type specimen database being prepared in Germany.  If others need additional information, please contact a person identified on the home page.  The program will be expanded to provide the information.
